Entry:    élan (n.)

In context:  “As a drug addict, Gately was distinguished by his ferocious and jolly élan.”

Definition:  In English use chiefly abstr.: Ardour, impetuousness, vivacity.

Other:    Well, I’d always thought his meant something more along the line of cheerfulness.  The Scrabble dictionary has it simply as “enthusiasm.”

A relatively recent addition – 1880 CE.
