In context:   “The patient Ms. Gompert seemed both to be fighting for breath and to be breathing rapidly enough to induce hypocapnia…”

Definition:  Physiol. an abnormally low concentration of carbon dioxide in the blood.

Other:    I’m not a doctor, but this seems tautological:

1908    Amer. Jrnl. Physiol. 21 140   Hypo- and hyper-capnia are abnormal conditions.
